Of Post Abortive Women, 94% regret abortion

Complications Of Abortion

AN ABORTION is usually a safe and legal procedure, but many problems can occur either during or after a legal abortion, problems that you might not have been told about. You deserve to know what can happen to you if you choose an abortion.

Approximately 10% of women undergoing elective abortion will suffer immediate complications. The most common complications that can occur at the time of an abortion are:
  • perforation of the uterus
  • excessive bleeding
  • infection
  • embolism
  • retained tissue
  • hemorrhage
  • cervical injury
  • endotoxic shock
  • "boggy" uterus
  • failure to recognize an ectopic pregnancy
Warren Hern, Abortion Practice (Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Company, 1990).

A survey of post-abortive women found that:

28% attempted suicide

31% experienced suicidal feelings

60% commented that the decision to abort made their lives worse

94% regretted the decision to abort
"Survey of Reaction to Abortion," The Post Abortion Review, Fall 1994, pp. 6-8.

Over 50% of women experienced one or more of the following feelings after they had abortions: depression, guilt, regret, nervousness, insomnia.

Celeste McGovern, "Hag-Ridden by Post-Abortion Guilt," British Columbia Report, 10/18/93.

Problems with future pregnancies

After abortion, 24% of women experience complications with later pregnancies. These include excessive bleeding, premature delivery, cervical incompetence or rupture of the placenta.

Acta/Obstetrics and Gynecology Scandinavia, Vol. 58 (1979), pp. 491-494, American Journal of Obs/Gyn Vol. 141 (1981), pp.769-772 and Vol. 146 (1983), pp.136-140.

Women who abort are nearly four times more likely to start abusing alcohol or drugs.

New Study Confirms Link Between Abortion and Substance Abuse," The Post Abortion Review, Vol. 1 No. 3, Fall 1993.

Tubal Pregnancies

Tubal (ectopic) pregnancies increase by 30% after one abortion, and by 160% after 2 or more abortions.
American Journal of Obs.& Gyn, Vol. 160 (1988), pp. 642-6.

Miscarriages

Approximately 14% of women who have an abortion will miscarry a future pregnancy, and that risk increases to 200% with multiple abortions.

Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 243, (1980) pp 2495-2499.

Placenta Previa

The risk of placenta previa, which produces extremely severe, life-threatening bleeding during future pregnancies, is increased by600% after an abortion.

American Journal of Obs. & Gyn., Vol. 141 (1981), pp. 769-772.

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (P.I.D.)

Approximately 5% of women who abort develop P.I.D. within 4 weeks after a first trimester abortion. For patients who have a Chlamydia infection at the time of abortion the risk of P.I.D. increases to 23%.

"Physical Health Risks of Abortion: Scientific Studies Reveal Significant Risk," The Elliot Institute, PO Box 9292 Colorado Springs, CO 80923.

Women with prior or current P.I.D. experience a decrease in fertility and an extended period of pain following an abortion.

Acta/Obstetrics and Gynecology Scandinavia, Vol. 58, 1979, pp. 539-542 and Vol. 61 (1982), pp. 557-560.

Breast Cancer

An analysis of 38 worldwide studies found a 30% overall increased risk of breast cancer after abortion.

"Induced Abortion as an Independent Risk Factor for Breast Cancer: A Comprehensive Review and Meta-Analysis" Joel Brind, et al.,Epidemiology & Community Health, Vol. 481 (1996)

The risk of breast cancer increases to 90% for abortions performed after 18 weeks, and to 150% if the woman is under 18.

Mads Melbye et al., "Induced Abortion and Breast Cancer," New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 336 (1997), p. 83 / Janet Daling et al., "Risk of Breast Cancer Among Young Women: Relationship to Induced Abortion," Journal of National Cancer Institute, Vol. 86 (1994) p. 1585.

Some women are at higher risk

100% greater risk of medical complications for women under 20 than for women between 25-29.
Canadian Journal of Public Health, Vol. 73 (1982), pp. 396-400.

150% greater risk of cervical injury as a result of abortion for women under 20 than for women over 30 years of age.

New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 309 (1983), pp. 621-624.

A teenage girl is 10 times more likely to attempt suicide if she has had an
abortion in the last six months.

Garfinkel, et.al., Stress Depression, and Suicide: A Study of Adolescents in Minnesota, Minneapolis University of Minnesota Extension Services 1986.

Women who have one abortion are four times more likely to abort a later pregnancy than women with no abortion history.

Joyce, "The Social & Economic Correlates of Pregnancy Resolution Among Adolescents in New York by Race & Ethnicity: A Multivariate Analysis," American Journal of Public Health, Vol. 78(6) (1988), pp. 626-631.

The more severely ill the psychiatric patient, the worse is her post-abortion state.

The haunting 5th month abortion of Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Julia Holcomb

via lifesitenews
I was told years ago that 95% of post-abortive couples break up. The trauma/sadness/anger is simply too much for a relationship to bear. This is certainly true for Tyler and Holcomb.

The facts are that Tyler, a rock star in his late 20s, took a 15-year-old girl as his girlfriend during the sex, drugs and rock n roll days of the 1970s. Her oddly permissive mother signed over guardianship of her to him, while moving on to yet another marriage. This resulted in a pregnancy that young Julia was eventually convinced to abort, and subsequent real trauma to both parents. Tyler attended the abortion and experienced immediate regret as he watched her give birth to their son, who he claims was born alive and left there to die. "Jesus, what have I done?"

She initially resisted calls to abort the child.  Then a mysterious house fire nearly claimed her life.  While laying on her hospital bed after barely surviving the fire, Tyler badgered her and threatened her with abandonment until she agreed to the abortion. Their relationship broke up anyway.  She suffered much grief and despair after that, eventually joining a church.  She rebuilt her life, attained her GED, married and had seven children.

Bottom line is, this vulnerable girl and baby needed protection, and they got it from no one.

Kanye complains abortion mommy bribes can cost up to 100K

"An abortion can cost a ballin' n***a up to 50gs maybe a 100. Gold diggin' b*****s be getting pregnant on purpose. #STRAPUP my n****s!" he tweeted.

I think what he means by "ballin'" is his basketball-playing friends. "STRAPUP" apparently means to wear a condom during sex. So he is advising his athlete friends to wear condoms during sex so they don't need to pay expensive abortion bribes after the girls get pregnant.

Huh. Maybe he should advise these ball players to date only girls from New York, where the African American abortion rate is 60%.  No wait.  Better hope they didn't see the new pro-life billboards.  They might get a conscience.

Is NYC the abortion capital of the U.S.A. at 41% of all pregnancies?

New York City released their vital statistics recently for year 2009. Did you know that 41% of all pregnancies in that city end in abortion? 87K "induced terminations" compared to 127K live births. What is all this about "safe, legal and rare"? Sounds like a load of B.S. There is nothing at all rare about abortion.

Some like to blame this on single motherhood, but of all of their live births, 55,767 were to unwed mothers and 71,006 were to married ladies.

Of the 87K abortions, 41K were to blacks, 28K to hispanics, 10K to whites and 5K to asians.

Bottom line, black women had 27.4K births and 41k abortions in NYC in 2009. More abortions than births, about 4 out of 7. Hispanic women had 40K births and 28K abortions, about 3 out of 7. White women had 38K births and 10K abortions, about 1 out of 5. Asian women had 18K births and 5K abortions, about 1 out of 5.

The New York Times failed to mention that 4 our of 7 black pregnancies end in abortion. But they did manage to interview a few young ladies at a Planned Parenthood clinic in Greenwich Village.
A 17-year-old girl there to pick up a friend said she had had an abortion in May. It was her second; the first was when she was 15. The girl said she sometimes used condoms. “But I wasn’t using them when I got pregnant,” she said. “I might use them more now, but I don’t know.” Like the other women outside the clinic, she asked not to be named to preserve her privacy.

A 20-year-old woman being helped by two male friends said she had her first abortion at 16, and also had a 7-month-old child. “It was an accident,” the woman said. “I used a condom every time, but I already have a kid, and I’m not ready for another one.”

Another woman, who was 22, said she had become pregnant after not using birth control because a doctor had told her she was infertile. “I’ve always been against abortion,” the woman, who lives on Staten Island, said. “But if I had a kid now, it would have a terrible life. I’d rather wait.”

Whoopie Would Rather See Babies Dead Than Adopted

The interchange between Whoopie Goldberg and Elizabeth Hasslebeck on The View Tuesday highlighted many of the smarmy, cynical reasons selfish women give for aborting their children.

I would like to start off by saying that neither Hasslebeck nor I advocate completely outlawing abortion. But Goldberg was arguing AGAINST the new law in Oklahoma (now temporarily blocked) urging women to look at an ultrasound of their unborn baby before undergoing the procedure. It makes my blood boil to hear it, but seeing her words spelled out gives me the opportunity to refute misconceptions spread by the pro-abortion left. The photo on the right is an ultrasound of my own youngest dumpling at about 12 weeks gestation.

After Hasselbeck posed, "Are you going in there with all the knowledge of what's actually going on inside of you at 16 weeks?" Goldberg responded: "But what difference does it make if you can't have the baby? What difference does it make if you're going to bring a baby in and you can't feed it and you can't take care of it and then people end up killing their kids? I hate it!"

Um. Whoopie. Did you ever hear of adoption? Killing unborn babies and killing babies are not the only options out there. Oh, you DID hear of adoption. Here is what Whoopie has to say about adoption:

"I'm for the best possible life that you can give your child. And if you end up having to give your child away, which many people do, you know, the guilt of knowing that that kid is out there, or what some people have resorted to doing when they discover they actually can't deal with it, they do terrible things to their kids."

OK. So adoption often works out well, and sometimes does not. And on the off chance the adoption would turn out badly, kill the kid quickly NOW! Does that make sense? Or is it the immature, selfish justification of someone who does not want to "know the kid is out there". Yes, it is painful to be a birth mother and not know how your child is growing and developing. A mature woman understands, though, that this is not about them. It is about what is best for the child. And saying that a dead fetus is better than an adopted baby is highly presumptuous and plain wrong.

Then, of course, Goldberg brings up the ubiquitous coathanger argument. Hasslebeck agrees that coathanger abortions are not the way to go. But that is not even part of the issue here. The issue is whether or not women should have to submit to an ultrasound of their fetus before an abortion procedure. So they can see the little wiggler with their own eyes. And even so, doctors are required to provide patients with a copy of the ultrasound, but the patient is under no obligation to watch it. They can avert their eyes during the procedure if they wish.

The whole idea behind this law is to counter the fallacy that aborted babies are not babies, but a "bunch of cells". Why should the women not be educated about their babies before making a life and death decision. Because this might cause temporary trauma to the woman? What about the permanent trauma caused to the baby. What about the trauma to the woman when she finally *does* figure out exactly how developed her child was at the time of death. How can we save her from emotional pain then. Truly, this is one situation where the truth is important. Hiding a baby's heartbeat and kicks and wiggles from its mother, just to market abortion procedures, is a crime against the baby and a crime against humanity.

Hat Tip and many thanks to Newsbusters for this thought-provoking article.

The Aborted Baby Bird

It broke my heart. I had just noticed in the last couple of days that a nest had been rebuilt on top of the little speaker mounted above my sliding glass door in back. Happiness. Birds. New life. A thriving ecosystem.

Somebody else noticed too. In the interests of maintaining confidentiality, I will call him Mr. Oviraptor. I saw him, a much larger bird than the little grey one fluttering around him. He swooped onto the nest and begin tossing down shreds of nesting material. I chased him off. Not 5 minutes later, the nest was torn completely in half, tossed to the ground, and 2 pale blue eggs lay dashed upon the concrete. One was wiggling feebly in the remnants of its shell. I felt sick. This is horrible. This crime. The bully just came in and ended these small lives.

And as I stared and then turned away, I thought about how we humans do this to our own offspring in the womb. It is unconscionable.

The Anti-Mommy, Take-Your-Abortionist-To-Lunch Lady

I gotta tell you. BitchPhD is going too far for me. Ironically, I found this pro-abortion blog post though a technorati search for "mommy" blogs. Go figure. Maybe Technorati needs to start a category for anti-mommy blogs.
Today is the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers.
If you know someone who works in an abortion clinic, take them out to dinner, buy them some flowers, or just sit them down and tell them that you appreciate what they do. If there’s a clinic that performs abortions near you, drop in and say a quick thanks. And if you’re online reading this right now, head on over to the National Abortion Federation website, and write a note of appreciation.

Not all readers agreed with BitchPhD, however. Guest commented:
"Destigmatize abortion care." I'm pro choice but I would never delude myself into believing that abortion is a good thing. It's a tragedy, under any circumstances. This kind of childish, hyper-rationalized discourse ("national day of appreciation") gives a bad name to the grownup's ironic pro-life position nerved by the tragic understanding of life and death. Grow up. Learn to live with stigma.

Although some commenters were enthusiastic in their support for abortion, like Michael:
Not only is abortion not a tragedy, but it is an affirmation of the highest moral good, the power to choose, the power to reject slavery.
And who, in any circumstance other than in shackles, is more enslaved than a woman who IS FORCED to remain pregnant against her will, serving as life support system, waste handler, and food digester for a blob?
Let us celebrate abortion providers, the RU-486 people, and anyone else willing to stand bulwark against the forced USE of a woman!

Blob? I take umbrage at that. I was a "blob" once, myself. Heart beating after 18 days, as a matter of fact. Which is usually before a woman even knows she is pregnant. Those who delude themselves into thinking an unborn baby is a "blob" or "tissue" are lying to themselves, or woefully uneducated.
And "forced USE of a woman?" Unless it was rape, the woman knew that intercourse could result in pregnancy. I don't call that forced use. That she is unwilling to take responsibility for her actions is disappointing. That a baby needs to pay for her selfishness with his/her life is unconscionable.

Abortion Art

Remember when I went to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art last month? There was one piece of art that caught my complete attention. I love vintage stuff, so my first impression was how nice! Look at these old-fashioned objects. Then as I looked closer, I was like--hey--those are bloody surgical instruments in that bedpan down there. Oh, wait a minute. What is this about? My friend went to the wall and the card read: THE ILLEGAL OPERATION, 1962. Deep breath. Oh.

Artscenecal describes the piece:
At the same time Kienholz doesn't simply make voyeurs of us. He communicates empathy and culpability so that we become both victim and perpetrator if we remain passive. During the 1960s, when many people were campaigning for legalized abortion (remember that it was not legalized until 1973), Kienholz created The Illegal Operation, in which a woman's body, represented by a sagging burlap sack filled with cement, is trussed to the back of a shopping cart, complete with an oozing gash in the midriff area. Filthy buckets, pots, and bedpans filled with rusted and stained surgical instruments sit on a ragged knit rug. Its circular design draws one into the horror of the scene. About the piece, Kienholz declared, "I'm not sure what art is--you know, art, capital A-R-T--and I don't even care a hell of a lot about what art is, but if there is such a thing as art, and if I have even made a piece of art, The Illegal Operation would be it. . .We bleed off it."

For Those Who Can't Be Thankful

This vid made me cry. My mind turns to the people who can't be thankful this year. Lives lost in the womb. Babies so young that nobody can hear them scream. This lady quit as a director of Planned Parenthood after assisting an abortion via ultrasound on a 13-week-old fetus.

Talk to your teen girls

Many of us who read this blog have had full lives. Lives full of choices. Many of us have been faced with the ultimate choice. Life or death. Do we kill or let live? Choices have consequences.
Do you feel that your choices have led to blessings in your life? Or have you been cursed?
There is a way out. Take your battle-won wisdom and teach it to the children. Teach them it is wrong to kill for expediency's sake. Warn them. Show them the blessings that have come your way for doing the right thing.

It is arrogant to think that we should be the arbiters of life and death. The Lord humbles the arrogant and lifts up the humble.

Thank you for listening to my Sunday thoughts.

Men Working

I have to say I am so impressed with what I have been reading lately on the blogs. If you haven't seen these posts already, I want to share them. Julia at Sometimes Lucid wrote another amazing post, this time about the Holocaust. You know this is a topic near and dear to my heart. It is a description of some of the events of Kristallnacht, which I wrote about previously in my post on Holocaust Remembrance Day. Julia's post is a forwarded email from the Simon Wiesenthal Center and is very very profound.

Another great pro-life blog post was written by Cassandra-Ann, about Down-Syndrome babies and abortion. This is a personal story about a family she knows and their experience having not one but two DS pregnancies in a row.

My own topic for discussion today is about street resurfacing. This was the first inkling I had that something was going to be happening on my street:

I had to park my minivan outside last night. I can't tell you how relieved I was to find my car still there this morning. I am petrified about parking my car on the street overnight ever since my car was stolen out of my driveway back in 1997. Yes, I live in a good neighborhood. But isn't that where the car thieves go shopping when they want a car? Thankfully, it is still there and I will park it in the garage tonight.

As I walked my son to the school bus this morning, I saw that all of the cars were moved off the street except one. There was a green Jeep Wrangler parked on the street in front of a neighbor's house who I sort of know. This lady used to work at the school's front desk, and she is in the process of moving, and her kids are supposedly living at the house. So when her car was still in the street 1 hour after the moving deadline, I called the school to see if they could reach her and let her know the car was about to be towed. I hope they were able to get to her on time.

The boys are very excited about all of this activity. They love big machines and men who do big, important work.

Graphic turning points, part 1

I saw an article on MSN recently about abortions. Who has them and for what reasons. Turns out it is not just scared little teenagers. I was sad that supposedly mature grown-ups would make the poor choices that got them into that situation.

It brought me back to a turning point in my life. You may wish to stop reading here. What is to follow will be a graphic description of a biology lab experiment in college involving chicken embryos.

I did not know what the lab was that day. I went to bio lab as usual. It was my freshman year at UCLA in the early 1980s. When I got there I saw a bunch of chicken eggs waiting. I was told that these were fertilized eggs, and that we were expected to follow the directions to observe them. We had to crack the eggshell without breaking the yolk. The 1-cm long embryos resided on one side of the egg yolk in a quarter-sized disk of blood vessels. We had to cut the disk off of the yolk using scissors and float it in a petri dish of clear ringers lactate solution and put it under a low powered microscope. I did this and then observed the little embryo floating with it's little heart beating. I got a prickly feeling down the back of my neck as I realized that I was watching the little embryo die. Die because of what I had done. I felt disturbed and nauseous during the remainder of the lab. As I walked out of the building into the fresh evening air of winter I vowed to myself that I would never do that to a child of mine. Never. I have kept my word.
